The researchers combined nonlinear pre-distortion with digital resolution enhancement to solve the challenges associated with digital-to-analog converters (DACs). Data centers are the backbone of today's information technology infrastructure.These centralized hubs are used to manage, store, and distribute large amounts of data and applications, acting as control centers for digital services and businesses worldwide.They are critical to maintaining data access, enabling scalability, facilitating disaster recovery, and ensuring robust security protocols that support the smooth running of our globally connected digital world. At the heart of data center operations is data center interconnection, an important network infrastructure responsible for facilitating communication between various components within and across data centers.Digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are integral components in these interconnects, and their task is to convert digital signals into analog signals for transmission over copper cables.Their role in achieving high-speed, low-cost and low-latency connectivity cannot be overemphasized.However, the challenge comes from the demand for high-resolution DACs, which constitute a significant bottleneck due to the associated increase in optical module costs. Breakthrough in Data Transmission Technology Facing this challenge, the researchers propose a groundbreaking solution that combines query table-based nonlinear pre-distortion techniques with digital resolution enhancements.This innovative approach has been published online in the Advanced Photonics Nexus on April 24, 2024 – Qi Wu, Zhaopeng Xu, Yixiao Zhu, Tonghui Ji, Honglin Ji, Yu Yang, Junpeng Liang, Chen Cheng, Gang Qiao, Zhaopeng He, Beyond 200-Gb/s O-band intensity modulation and direct detection optics with joint look-up-table-based predistortion and digital resolution enhancement for low-cost data center interconnects. This innovative approach aims to ease the limitations of high-resolution DACs while maintaining efficient data transfer and communication across data center interconnections.The technology has achieved significant experimental results, breaking the limit of data transmission rate.By using table-based pre-distortion to mitigate nonlinear damage and digital resolution enhancement to reduce the need for DAC resolution, the research team achieved record-breaking data transfer performance. It is worth noting that digital signal processing technology is capable of transmitting signals over 124 GBd PAM-4/6 and 112 GBd PAM-8 using 3/3.5/4 bit DACs (3/3.5/4-bit DACs) over 2 km of standard single-mode fiber.In addition, it uses 1.5/2/3-bit DACs (1.5/2/3-bit DACs) to facilitate the transmission of 124 GBd PAM-2/3/4 signals over 40 km of standard single-mode fiber.These results represent a significant advancement in data center interconnect technology and demonstrate the feasibility of supporting next-generation Ethernet (Ethernet) links with target speeds of up to 800-GbE and possibly even 1.6-TbE. Co-correspondent Zhaopeng Xu of Pengcheng Laboratory emphasized the importance of these findings, emphasizing that they demonstrate "the highest data rates with the lowest cost DACs for data center interconnections."” In addition to revolutionizing data center interconnectivity, these advances are expected to transform the applications of 6G access networks and passive optical networks.By overcoming the challenges associated with high-resolution DACs, this innovative approach also paves the way for more cost-effective and efficient data transfer.
