The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer found that people with a higher body mass index (BMI) were more than 10% more likely to develop cancer, regardless of whether they had a heart metabolic disorder (cardiovascular disease or type II diabetes).The study, based on a sample survey of more than 500,000 European adults, also showed a particularly high risk of cancer associated with increased BMI in cardiovascular disease, highlighting the need for these populations to prevent obesity to reduce cancer risk.The study was recently published in BMC Medicine.
Studies have shown that BMI above 25 is a determined risk factor for at least 13 cancers, including breast, colorectal, liver, kidney, pancreatic and ovarian cancers in postmenopausal women.But it's unclear whether high BMI itself is associated with increased risk, or whether other obesity-related diseases are also playing a role.
Heinz Freisling and colleagues used data from 577,343 adults to study the relationship between BMI and cancer risk in adults with/without cardiometabolic disorders, with 344,094 participants from the UK Biobank and 233,249 from the European Prospective Survey.
The two cohorts had a median follow-up of 10.9 years after recruitment, with 32,549 (9.5%) of participants in the UK Biobank developing primary cancer, compared with 19,833 (8.3%) of participants in the European Cancer and Nutrition Prospective Survey.76,881 (22%) of the participants in the UK Biobank were obese, and 36,361 (15%) of the participants in the European Prospective Survey on Cancer and Nutrition were obese.
Overall, a five-point increase in BMI was associated with an 11 percent higher risk of obesity-related cancer for individuals who did not have heart metabolic disease.A similar increase in risk was observed in participants with heart metabolic disease, with type 2 diabetes having an 11% increased risk of cancer for every 5 points increase in BMI, while those with cardiovascular disease had a 17% increased risk of cancer in the same situation.
Studies have shown that higher BMI is associated with a higher cancer risk, regardless of whether or not you have other heart metabolic diseases.But obese individuals with cardiovascular disease appear to have a particularly high risk of cancer, suggesting that targeted weight loss interventions can benefit this group.
