Urinary tract infections are one of the most common bladder infections and have a particularly severe impact on women.About 40 to 60 percent of women experience urinary tract infections at least once in their lives, and a quarter of women are at risk of recurring infections.Urinary tract infections are usually treated with antibiotics.However, this increases the risk of antibiotic resistance, making it less effective when reused.
As an alternative, the researchers developed the MV140 vaccine, which contains four inactivated bacteria that cause urinary tract infections.This soluble vaccine is sprayed daily under the tongue for 3 months, stimulating lymphatic tissue through the soft mucous membrane in the mouth, which is an integral part of the immune system.
On April 6, at the 39th Annual Meeting of the European Urology Association in Paris, France, the latest clinical trial presented by the researchers showed the long-term effectiveness of the MV140 vaccine for the first time.
The study's authors previously reported the vaccine's short-term effectiveness after three and six months.They tracked medical records and regularly followed up 89 participants who were vaccinated in 2014.All participants had a history of urinary tract infections but had no infection during the 3-month vaccination period.
After receiving the spray vaccine, participants did not have urinary tract infections for an average of 54.7 months.More than half – 54% of women and 53% of men – avoided urinary tract infections within nine years.
Bob Yang, co-author of the study and of the Royal Berkshire Hospital, said: "People with urinary tract infections are less ill, only need to drink a lot of water and feel good.”
However, one of the concerns is the size of the study.Urological Cancer Specialist S.C. Adam Ramin notes that about half of all women develop urinary tract infections in their lifetime.By comparison, only 54% of vaccinated women avoided urinary tract infections during the nine-year study period."In such a small sample population, this falls within the scope of insignificant differences.”
Previously, another research team tried to develop a vaccine for urinary tract infections in tablet form.But Yang says one attraction of using spray is that people are more likely to accept it.
"It's not a pill, it's a spray used under the tongue to help with compliance.Yang explained that the taste of pineapple can help people forget that they're on medication, and that sprays are easier for older people who have difficulty swallowing the medication.
