The research team of the Department of Orthopedics and the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for the Prevention and Control of Osteoarthritis of the Elderly has revealed the negative global early osteoarthritis disease.The results were recently published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, with Professor Lei Guanghua, Zeng Chao and Wei Jie co-authors of the paper, and Xiangya Hospital as the first unit and the first communication unit.
Osteoarthritis is a global refractory disease, which used to be considered to be high in the middle-aged and elderly population, but it has shown a significant trend of young people with obesity and sports injuries.
Osteoarthritis diagnosed before the age of 55 is early osteoarthritis. Once advanced, artificial joint replacement is often required, but the service life of artificial joint prosthesis is limited.Therefore, identifying the global disease burden and economic loss of early osteoarthritis and taking effective measures are the major challenges of bone and joint health management.However, no studies have been conducted to address these issues.
To this end, the team systematically analyzed and visualized the incidence, prevalence, and years of healthy life loss (YLDs) of early osteoarthritis from 1990 to 2019, based on the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study, WHO, ILO and other databases.
For the first time in 30 years, the study systematically analyzed the distribution of early osteoarthritis disease in different regions, joints, ages, and genders, and found that the incidence, prevalence, YLDs and corresponding age standardization rates were increasing year by year.
The research was funded by the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases, and guided by Hu Guoqing, a professor at Xiangya School of Public Health at Zhongnan University.
