Toshitaka Suzuki, an associate professor of zoology at the University of Tokyo in Japan, has demonstrated for the first time that birds can use their wings to make movements to convey specific meanings.The study was published on March 25 in Current Biology.
To learn more about the birds' behavior, Suzuki and his colleagues spent several years installing hundreds of nest boxes in a forest where Japanese tits grow.
To mimic the tree holes that tits normally inhabit, each nest box has a 7.5 cm wide hole, just enough for a bird to pass through.
During the breeding season, the team observed 321 nesting returns in eight pairs of tits, which often brought food with them to feed their young.
If a couple of tits arrive at the nest together, each tits will perch on nearby branches before entering.About 40 percent of the time, female tits flap their wings for a few seconds, with their chests facing the male tits.The male tits then enter the nest, followed by the female tits.
However, when neither bird flaps its wings (44% of nest returns), female tits usually enter the nest first.The researchers observed only one male sparrow flapping its wings repeatedly, and then the female was the first to enter the nest.When each bird arrived separately, the researchers did not observe flapping of its wings at all.
Suzuki said: "We can conclude that Japanese tits use wing flapping to prompt their mates to enter the nest first, and this wing flapping serves as a symbolic gesture to convey a specific message of 'you first' telling each other to enter the nest first."This study is the first to demonstrate that birds can use the movements of their wings to convey a specific meaning.”
The findings suggest that Japanese tits and other birds communicate in a much more complex way than previously thought.
"There is a hypothesis that language evolved from gesture communication.Therefore, this research can help us understand the evolution of complex communication, including the evolution of language.Suzuki said.
