Heart attacks and strokes are the leading causes of death worldwide.Although researchers have made significant progress in identifying risk factors for these diseases over the past few decades, they have not yet been fully identified.
A new study published in Nature Medicine found that people with high levels of nicotinic acid, also known as vitamin B3, may be more likely to have a heart attack or stroke than people with low levels.
Vitamin B3 is a popular supplement.
Vitamins are often added to fortified foods that can be taken as supplements, but excess vitamins can inflame blood vessels.
"If you treat high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, excluding all existing risk factors, you can still suffer a heart attack, which means we're missing something."Stanley Hazen, the paper's corresponding author at Cleveland Clinic in the United States, said.
To fill these gaps, Hazen and colleagues took blood samples from 2,331 adults in the United States and 832 adults in Europe who opted for cardiovascular screening.The team analyzed the substance in the sample called metabolites, which are byproducts of metabolic processes such as digestion.The researchers then tracked the participants for more than three years for conditions such as heart attacks and strokes.
The results showed that people with higher levels of metabolites called 4PY in their blood were on average 60 percent more likely to experience such events than those with lower levels.4PY is produced only when the body breaks down excess vitamin B3.
Further experiments showed that 4PY inflamed the rodent's blood vessels."We know that inflammation is a major cause of heart disease.Hazen explained.
High levels of vitamin B3 in the human body are not uncommon.This is partly due to the fact that certain foods, such as grains and flour, are often added to them in countries including the UK and the US.
Hazen says vitamin B3 supplements are becoming increasingly popular because of evidence that they have anti-aging effects.In addition, doctors only recently stopped prescribing high-dose vitamin B3 to people at risk of cardiovascular disease because it was initially thought that vitamins could protect people from these diseases by lowering cholesterol.
Jenny Jia, of Northwestern University, said: "This study focused on people of European descent.It is unclear whether similar results will occur in people of different ethnic or ethnic backgrounds."
