The inherent characteristic of public health is multidisciplinary, and the Harvard School of Public Health has the broadest cross-disciplinary characteristics, distinctive in all universities of its kind.As can be seen from the College's faculty website, the vast majority of its faculty interests and expertise extend to many areas such as biology, quantitative science, sociology and policy science, focusing on population health, especially the poor and underserved.Growing up and rooted in biology, Harvard School of Public Health works to combat most of today's most serious diseases, such as AIDS, obesity and diabetes, cancer and heart disease.Its vigorous development of core quantitative disciplines, such as epidemiology and biostatistics, analyzes the risks and wide-ranging effects of health problems, allowing the College to look beyond individuals to the entire population.In addition, it has always placed disease prevention at the centre of public health, actively using policy science and social science tools to understand how factors shape individual health-related behavior and the health impact of society.
The college currently has nine departments, each responsible for developing teaching and academic programs and for recruiting, appointing, promoting and retaining faculty.These 9 are:
Laboratory Science: Genetics and Complex Diseases, Immunity and Infectious Diseases
Quantitative Science: Biostatistics, Epidemiology
Laboratory/Quantitative: Environmental Health, Nutrition
Social and policy sciences: health policy and management, population and international health, and society, human development and health.
The College also has two faculties: the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) and the Department of Public Health Implementation (DPHP).The Faculty integrates the work of the College in two important areas.DBS regulates the PhD program in biosciences and provides a forum for discussion of priorities, major decisions and laboratory science that requires considerable investment in space and financial resources.DPHP was established in 1997 to respond to the National College of Medicine's call to serve public health practices and to enhance student-student service, education, and research opportunities.The department also develops student leadership skills and educates community partners on health challenges.
There are also several interdisciplinary centres that focus on interdisciplinary research on major public health issues: cancer prevention, injury control, social and health, health communication, health and human rights, and population and development research.These centres are evaluated every five years to ensure that they contribute significantly to the intellectual prosperity of colleges and universities.
