Current heart simulators do not fully capture the complexity of a heart, and only have a shelf life of 2 to 4 hours.Animal research is expensive and time-consuming, and the findings don't necessarily apply to humans.The new bionic machine, which has a lower heart cost and a shelf life of up to months, can compensate for these shortcomings. "The simulator has great benefits as a research tool for those studying different heart valve conditions and interventions.Ellen Roche, a biomedical engineer at MIT, said, "It can serve as a surgical training platform for clinicians, medical students and interns, allowing device engineers to study their new designs and even help patients better understand their diseases and potential treatments."” The researchers focused on mitral regurgitation, a condition in which valves between the left ventricles do not close normally, causing leakage of the heart valve and blood to flow back.This condition affects about 24.2 million people worldwide and can lead to shortness of breath, swelling of limbs and heart failure.Given the complexity of the valve structure, surgery to treat this disease is very complex and therefore requires effective techniques and precise surgical methods. To better understand mitral valves in healthy and diseased conditions, the team built a bionic robotic heart based on a pig heart.They replaced the heart muscle of the left ventricle with a silicone, air-driven soft machine pump system.When inflated, the system twists and squeezes the heart like a real heart muscle, pumping artificial blood through a simulated circulatory system that mimics the beating of a biological heart. When the team destroyed the mitral valve of the bionic machine's heart, it showed a characteristic of leaking heart valves.The team then asked heart surgeons to correct the damage using three different techniques: fixing the linked valve lobule tissue with an artificial cord, replacing the valve with an artificial valve, and implanting a device to help the valve close. All three surgeries were successful, bringing blood pressure, blood flow and heart function back to normal.The system also enables the research team to collect real-time data during surgery and is compatible with imaging techniques currently used in clinics.Since the artificial blood used in the system is transparent, it is also a direct visualization process.The results of this study suggest that the device is a new heart model that could provide a better platform for heart surgery training and practice. Next, the team aims to optimize the current bionic machine heart system by reducing production time and extending shelf life.They are also exploring 3D printing technology that aims to reconstruct an artificial heart for the system instead of using a pig heart. "Our bionic machine heart may help improve the device's design cycle, allowing for rapid iterations, allowing the product to be approved by regulators and brought to market quickly.""Accelerating and improving these processes will ultimately benefit patients," Roche said.
