Spanish scientists have found that the genetic diversity of the ancient Iberian lynx is lower than that of the modern lynx, because the genetic mix of Eurasian and Iberian lynx has contributed to the genetic diversity of the modern lynx.The study was published on January 16 in Nature-Ecology and Evolution.
Iberian lynx diverged from its sister species Eurasian lynx about a million years ago, but their genomes showed DNA transfer (a process called genetic infiltration) between the two species.A severe population bottleneck in the 20th century reduced the Iberian lynx to only two isolated small populations in southern Spain, with genetic diversity the lowest ever recorded for any mammal.
Maria Lucena-Perez and colleagues sequenced the genomes of three ancient Iberian lynx fossil skeletons from about 2,000 to 4,000 years ago and compared them with 30 Iberian lynx from two sites, an ancient Eurasian lynx from northern Iberia (about 2,500 years ago).
Researchers have discovered a process of continuous or recurrent genetic mixing with the Eurasian lynx in the Iberian lynx genome.This process, they argue, may explain why modern Iberian lynx populations, despite recent declines, are more genetically diverse than ancient populations.
The researchers say the study could be instructive for conservation strategies such as "genetic rescue," which increase genetic diversity in isolated populations by introducing individuals from different populations.While this is generally not recommended, the authors suggest that the feasibility of this strategy could be carefully considered for species that have experienced genetic mixing in the wild, including Iberian and Eurasian lynx.
