A study published in the inaugural issue of Nature Chemical Engineering on January 12 reported on a fully automated robot that can engineer proteins and is powered by artificial intelligence (AI).The findings are a proof-of-concept for protein design and construction that requires no human intervention.
Proteins play an important role in all life forms.Its various functions are widely used in biotechnology, chemistry and medicine.Modifying new proteins is often a repetitive and laborious process, sometimes taking years to complete.Due to the complexity of biological characteristics and experiments, developing a fully automated system that can operate continuously and learn from the generated data has been a challenge.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison team designed a robot platform called SAMPLE.It can rapidly modify proteins without human intervention or feedback.Powered by AI, the platform learns the relationship between protein sequences and functions, designs new proteins and sends them to robotic systems for testing, and then feedbacks to AI algorithms to improve their understanding.
To test the system, the researchers used four SAMPLE agents to engineer enzymes that are more heat-resistant.Although the search behavior is different, each SAMPLE agent can find enzymes with better thermal stability.The team estimates that the robotic system may be able to modify these proteins in a matter of weeks, while human scientists may take six to 12 months to complete the same task.
The team noted that delays in obtaining resources, robot failures, and system downtime could affect the robot's total time spent developing proteins.They proposed using the system to help scientists discover and design proteins as needed.
