In addition to researchers from the University of Queensland, researchers from The University of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and the Queensland Fertility Group, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia were also involved in the study.
Lead author Dr Katrina Moss of the University of Queensland School of Public Health said the findings should reassure PCOS women who are worried about their fertility.
Dr Katrina Moss said: "We studied 1,109 women who were receiving fertility treatment and found no difference in fertility between women with and without PCOS and women who received different treatment pathways.More women with PCOS received fertility treatment, 38% compared to 13% for women without PCOS, but the birth rate was comparable, so women with PCOS were not disadvantaged.”
About one in 10 Australian women suffer from PCOS, which can lead to irregular or non-ovulatory ovulation, making it difficult to conceive.Clinical practice guidelines recommend a step-by-step treatment for PCOS-related infertility — ovulation induction (OI), followed by intrauterine insemination (IUI), and finally IVF.
Dr Katrina Moss said: "Based on our analysis, most women with PCOS follow the recommended treatment pathway.71% of women with PCOS begin to develop OI, compared to only 36% of women who do not have PCOS, and women with PCOS rarely have IVF.Noninvasive treatments like OI are very effective, which is positive, and there is no downside to starting with this treatment and then going on to other treatments if needed, suggesting that clinical practice guidelines are effective for most women.”
Professor Jenny Doust, of the University of Queensland's School of Public Health, said the findings meant GPs could reassure women with PCOS that their chances of having a baby were no different than others.
"However, this may be due to the fact that women with PCOS are more likely to start fertility treatment earlier, i.e. around age 31, while women without PCOS start fertility treatment around age 34, which is a key factor for success," said Professor Jenny Durst.
"We also found that women who needed more invasive treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) were more likely to experience other reproductive defects, such as endometriosis, obesity, or higher age."Clinicians and patients should consider these factors when choosing a treatment route because it is important for women to receive the most effective treatment as soon as possible.”
The study is part of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health, which is administered by the University of Queensland and the University of Newcastle.The researchers thanked the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care for funding and the women who provided the survey data.
