It is common to see information about academic conference-arrangement rapporteurs, sometimes absurdly detailed titles, including administrative positions and academic honours, commonly known as hats.Recently, I was informed of the arrangements for the report of a large-scale academic conference jointly organized by the two domestic academic societies.The conference, which has more than 20 chapters and forums, is an important conference in the field, which covers the cross-fertilization of the two disciplines with the times.Such a large academic conference basically has no communication and interaction links, mainly belongs to the results display, but it is still very helpful for scholars to understand the progress of peer research.I have pointed out that "attending academic conferences" is one of the relatively timely and convenient means of obtaining peer research information. Appropriate participation in academic conferences in the industry is a daily act of scientific research.
However, the academic conference's sub-forum presents an interesting phenomenon when scholars present their reports.There are three main reporting elements listed in these sub-forums: the first belongs to a more normative tradition, specifically: reporting time, reporting title, name of the presenter, and reporting body.The second, similar to the first, merely adds the title of the rapporteur, such as professor, associate professor, researcher and associate researcher.Both situations are normal for academic conferences within academic circles.The third case may reflect the "cap-only" phenomenon of our country's characteristics.In some forums, the names of the speakers are listed in detail. These titles are actually hats, which cover two main categories: administrative hats: president of a university, vice-chancellor of a university, dean or vice-chancellor of a university, or even director.Scholars attending the conference told me that whether or not to list the title of rapporteur in each sub-forum may depend primarily on the head of the sub-forum, not on the uniform requirements of the conference.
I also attend academic conferences at home and abroad because of various needs, the academic atmosphere was relatively pure, and academic hats were relatively few.In these academic conference arrangements, all the presenters have only names and institutions, much less the identities of the presenters, especially administrative positions.Because of international academic conferences in general, scholars present at the conference are concerned only with the content of the report of the reporter, not with the status of the reporter.I was told by a student that at an international conference he had seen a bull sitting on the ground in the field looking closely at the post paper.However, in our domestic academic community, reports are often divided into three or six categories based on the title of the rapporteur, rather than on the content.Obviously, as scholars determined to struggle in the academic siege for life, they should know their academic characteristics and representative achievements, including their institutions and identities.So it doesn't matter whether these famous scholars' hats are listed when attending a meeting.In July 2012, I visited Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, visited the Geophysical Research Department of the Irish Institute of Higher Studies and gave an academic presentation to their researchers.Apparently, the head of this institution and his colleagues have followed my academic papers published in international journals.In 2013, I visited my relatives at MIT and planned to visit a peer group at the University of Massachusetts near Boston. The peer was very happy to invite me to talk and say that you have seen the results of your presentation.We also often see overseas academic institutions inviting scholars to give presentations, and generally do not need to list detailed titles and honorary hats.Because, in a normal academic environment, even Nobel laureates are just ordinary members of university professors, and do not receive much non-academic attention, such as the usual classes for Nobel laureates at prestigious universities.Mr Ding often puts Feynman's advice to him: "Don't think you're an expert just because you've won the Nobel Prize."This style of scientific mastery is always worth learning.
In fact, the above mentioned phenomenon that some branches and forums attach so much importance to the title of reporter is not unique in China, and it has a long history.Although the government has been calling for a breakthrough, it has had little effect.As a well-known scholar recently said to me, the state has been advocating for only a few years, but the phenomenon of only a hat seems to be increasing.It is well known that even if the title of a scholar is genuine, it is also a "past tense", indicating only that the scholar has made corresponding achievements before.If this kind of scholars turn to politics and leave the academic front line, they will lose their academic voice gradually and can only seek resources under the administrative title of "command".Not to mention, the academic achievements of some title holders are not entirely realistic, perhaps due to various non-academic factors, which are indisputable facts in our academic circle.The country should break the only, but break the only, difficult, difficult to go up to the blue sky.As I recently told a newly elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, WeChat: Congratulations!Come on, I hope you can contribute to the pure academic environment of our country.He immediately replied, thank you Mr. Liu, I will try to do practical work.
