When magma on the moon's surface cools and solidifies, a crystal called zircon may be formed.Because zircon crystals contain radioactive uranium, which decay to lead at a definite rate, scientists can determine their age by measuring lead and uranium content in lunar rock samples.
One of the authors, Philip Heck of the University of Chicago, used a technique called atomic probe tomography to reanalyze the crystals of zircon brought back from the moon by Apollo 17 in 1972, and found them 4.46 billion years old.
"We have now determined the history of zirconia, so we can know the basic time when magma solidified on the moon's surface."That basically anchors the lunar chronology," Heck said.”
In 2021, Heck's team used a mass spectrometer to analyze lunar rock samples and found them to be old, but the technology could not determine whether the lead in the samples came from radioactive decay or accidental presence.
Today, atomic probe tomography techniques allow detailed analysis of the composition and location of atoms, helping to demonstrate that lead in lunar rock samples actually originated from radioactive decay.The researchers used lasers to evaporate atoms from crystal surfaces that had sharpened to very thin "nanometer tips" to measure the ratio of uranium to lead atoms.
Mahesh Anand, a professor at Open University who was not involved in the study, said: "The solar system was formed about 4.57 billion years ago, which means we can determine the moon's formation time with reasonable accuracy.”
Previous studies have shown that the particular impact that formed the moon took place 50 million years after the solar system was formed, so the study will provide us with a very narrow window of time, Anand said.The moon forms and solidifies very quickly, both within a time window of 50 million years.
