According to a new study by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in the US, the proportion of calories consumed by children and adolescents from ultra-processed foods rose from 61% to 67% between 1999 and 2018.The study, published Aug. 10 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, analyzed the dietary intake of 33,795 children and adolescents in the United States.
"Some whole-grain bread and dairy products are super-processed foods that are healthier than others.Processing can make food fresher, strengthen and concentrate food, and improve consumer convenience.But many foods are less healthy than unprocessed and minimally processed foods, with higher sugar and salt content, lower fiber content and worrying increases in children and adolescents' consumption, said Zhang Fangfang, a nutrition epidemiologist at Friedman College.Excessive consumption of these foods can lead to other serious diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cancer.
The highest caloric peak came from ready-to-eat or heated ready-to-eat foods such as take-out, frozen pizza and hamburgers, which rose from 2.2 percent to 11.2 percent.The second-largest increase in calories came from packaged sweet snacks and desserts, up from 10.6% to 12.9%.
The average age of participants in the new study was 10.7 years, with roughly the same proportion of men and women.It relies on 24-hour dietary recall interviews conducted by trained personnel, where older children and adolescents report directly on what they eat, while parents and caregivers report directly on younger children.
The study found that there was no significant difference between parents' education level and household income in the overall survey results.This suggests that ultra-processed foods are common in children's diets.The findings support the need for researchers to track food consumption trends more fully, taking into account consumption of ultra-processed foods.”
During the study period, the caloric content of normally healthier raw or least processed foods decreased from 28.8% to 23.5%.The remaining calories come from moderately processed foods such as cheese, canned fruit and vegetables, as well as flavour enhancers added by consumers such as sugar, honey, maple syrup and butter.
On the bright side, the study found that the calorie content of sugary drinks dropped 51 percent from 10.8 percent to 5.3 percent.The findings suggest that concerted campaigns to reduce overall consumption of sugary beverages have benefited over the past few years.We need to mobilize the same energy and determination when it comes to cakes, biscuits, doughnuts and other unhealthy super-processed foods like brownies." said Zhang Fangfang.
"In other analyses, we used data from 2017-2018 to compare the composition of ultra-processed and non-super-processed foods.The results showed that ultra-processed foods had significantly higher calories from carbohydrates and added sugars, higher sodium, lower fiber, and lower calories from protein.Wang Lu, the lead author of the study and a postdoctoral candidate at Friedman College, said.
"Food processing is one aspect that is often overlooked in nutrition research.We may need to consider that over-processing of certain foods may be related to health risks, which are not related to malnutrition in over-processed foods." Zhang concluded.
