US scientists have found that a combination of bacteria can effectively turn plastic waste into useful compounds.These bacteria can help tackle the growing problem of plastic pollution by producing valuable chemicals and products such as adhesives, insulators and nylon.The study was recently published in Nature-Newsletter.
Plastic pollution is a growing global crisis that has far-reaching negative effects on the environment, wildlife and human health.One possible solution is to recycle plastic from microorganisms as a product, but it is extremely complex and difficult.
Two genetically modified strains of soil bacterium Pseudomonas odorata were designed to upgrade the most common plastic polyethylene terephthalate by University of Illinois-Champaign, James Collins, and colleagues at MIT.Each strain decomposes one of two products (phthalic acid and ethylene glycol) produced by chemical plastic decomposition.
It was found that these strains were more efficient in treating the two products together than in one strain alone.These bacteria were further upgraded to utilize plastics and converted into biodegradable polymers such as polyhydroxy fatty acid esters and mucoconate, which can be used to synthesize polyurethane and adipic acid.Polyurethane is used in insulators, foams, coatings and adhesives, while adipic acid is used in the manufacture of nylon.
These findings suggest that remodeling microbial communities may be a promising and effective platform for polymer upgrading and environmental sustainability.In addition, researchers believe that the concepts and strategies behind them may also be applied to other types of plastics.
