Inspired by the natural world, Jonathan Wilk, professor of chemistry at Purdue University, has developed a non-toxic, environmentally friendly adhesive that can be used as an alternative to traditional toxic, non-biodegradable adhesives Jonathan Wilk, professor of chemistry at Purdue University's School of Science and Material Engineering, says current adhesives cause a variety of environmental problems, almost all of which are petroleum-based, non-degradable and non-recoverable.Volatile petrochemicals in these adhesives can be toxic, such as building materials plywood, which is formed by bonding pieces of wood to formaldehyde-based adhesives.The new house releases formaldehyde, which can expose residents to this carcinogen.In addition, discarded adhesive products can exist for centuries and produce microplastics that pollute the ocean. To test the properties of the adhesive, the researchers bonded wood, plastic or metal together and used an instrument to break it to measure the adhesion.In most cases, new adhesives perform well, sometimes even better than toxic adhesives such as strong adhesives.
