Combining electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction (eCO2RR) with renewable energy is a powerful option for solving climate problems and producing high value-added chemicals.
To this end, Yang Jun, a researcher at the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Wang Jing, a professor at Yanshan University, jointly developed ultra-fine silver palladium (AgPd) nanoalloys.Relevant work was recently published in Advanced Functional Materials.
Carbon monoxide is particularly important in the electrocatalytic reduction and conversion of carbon dioxide such as formic acid, carbon monoxide, methane, ethylene, ethanol and methanol.Although electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction to carbon monoxide has the advantage of being able to react at room temperature and pressure, the Faraday efficiency (FCO) is lower than the theoretical value of overpotential.Therefore, the key to solving this problem is the design and development of efficient electrocatalysts that are more conducive to carbon dioxide reduction than hydrogenation.
The coupling size advantage and combination effect realize the high efficiency electrocatalytic reduction of carbon monoxide from ultra-fine AgPd alloy nanoparticles.Research team map
Based on theoretical calculations, the research team confirmed that the combination of silver and palladium atoms in different proportions could improve the Faraday efficiency of carbon dioxide electrocatalytic reduction.
The results of the electrochemical evaluation show that the Faraday efficiency of silver-palladium nanoparticles catalyzed CO2 conversion to carbon monoxide is 98.9%, and the current density of carbon monoxide is 5.1 mAcm-2, and stability is up to 25 hours.
This work highlights the importance of regulating active sites through atomic combinations, which can provide reference strategies for the rational design of electrocatalytic catalysts for CO2 reduction.
