Since the 1980s, Arctic warming has been expanding, accelerating the melting of permafrost and changing the landscape of the Arctic landscape.The melting of permafrost will release a large amount of carbon storage and accelerate global warming, which is of great practical significance.However, the effect of the physical process of permafrost melting on landscape changes in the area is unclear.
Using field observations, physical models, and environmental data collected in 2019, Shawn Chartrand and colleagues at Simon Fraser University studied the landscape changes and river course development in the Muskox Valley of Axelheimberg Island.They compared data collected with images from 1959 to reconstruct the region's 60-year history of landscape evolution.
The researchers found that the structure and evolution of the new river network in the region were influenced by changes in geometric ground patterns associated with the melting of permafrost.In the current warming climate, the erosion rate of the substratum and the thermal degradation of ice wedge may lead to subsidence over time.They also found that factors commonly used to predict river development in nonpermafrost areas did not affect the landscape evolution of the Arctic.
The results help to understand how the underlying processes determine the response of the Arctic and high-altitude permafrost landscape to global warming, characterized by increased summer variability.
