A team led by City University of Hong Kong (UHK) has made significant breakthroughs in nanomaterials research. It has successfully developed an efficient electrocatalytic catalyst that can greatly improve the efficiency of hydrogen production.
Professor Zhang Hua, Professor of Nanomaterials at Chengdu University, and his team have recently synthesized a catalyst using transition metal disulfide (TMD) nanoparticles with unconventional crystalline phases.The Panel considers this achievement to be of great significance because hydrogen produced by electrocatalytic water decomposition is a potential clean energy source or will replace fossil energy sources in the near future to reduce environmental pollution and greenhouse effects.
On September 13, 2023, this important study was published in Nature under the title "Phase-dependent growth of Pton MoS2 for highly efficient H2 evolution".The paper was written by Professor Zhang Hua and Anthony R., Department of Chemistry, Imperial College London, UK. Professor J. Kucernak.
Professor Zhang pointed out that the key to the study of electrocatalytic hydrolysis is to develop high-efficiency and stable catalysts.In the preparation of catalysts, choosing suitable carriers is of great significance to improve the activity and stability of catalysts.
As a new two-dimensional material, TMD nano-chip has been the focus of scientific research in recent years due to its unique physical and chemical properties.The crystalline phase is a very important factor in determining the properties and functions of TMD nanoscale.For example, conventional 2H phase molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has semiconductor properties, while unconventional 1T or 1T′ phase MoS2 exhibits metallic or semi-metallic properties, resulting in good conductivity.However, preparation of high purity, high quality 1T or 1T′ phase TMD nanoparticles is very challenging.Therefore, scientists are still at a groping stage for how the crystal phase of the nano-chip carrier controls the growth of materials.
In recent years, Professor Zhang Hua's team has developed many new methods of gas-solid reaction and salt-assisted synthesis, and successfully prepared many high purity and high quality unconventional 1T′ phase TMD crystal materials.These materials have special semi-metallic properties and have wide application prospects in photoelectronic devices, catalysis, energy storage and superconductivity.
In this work, Zhang Hua's team further developed a new method for preparing unconventional 2D TMD nanosheets and studied the crystal phase dependent growth of precious metals on unconventional 1T′-TMD and conventional 2H-TMD nanosheets.Further research shows that the material is an excellent electrocatalytic catalyst for hydrogen production.To overcome the mass transport limitation of platinum-based catalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen production in acidic media, the team tested using advanced floating electrodes.It was found that s-Pt/1T′-MoS2 catalyst could exhibit super high mass activity and exchange current density (127 AmgPt-1) at -50 mV overpotential.At the same time, the catalyst can work stably in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis cell for 500 hours, which has great application prospect.
Professor Zhang's team systematically investigated the phase-dependent growth of precious metals on 1T′-TMD and 2H-TMD nanoscale, and proved that 1T′-TMD nanoscale is an ideal catalyst carrier.
This research has expanded the field of Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials (PEN) and promoted the design and synthesis of high-efficiency catalysts.Professor Zhang said that in addition to further research on 1T'-TMD-based catalysts in the future, he will explore the industrial application prospects of the catalyst, hoping to contribute more to clean energy and sustainable development.
The research brought together collaborators from universities and research institutions in China, Singapore and the UK to demonstrate the importance of international cooperation in achieving scientific breakthroughs.
