Shark eco-tourism, which tourists pay to swim with wild sharks, may increase the likelihood that whale sharks will exhibit disruptive behavior similar to fast, zigzag movements associated with avoiding predators, British scientists have found.These findings suggest that ecotourism may have a significant impact on whale sharks' foraging and potential breeding behavior.The study was published in the Scientific Report on September 7.
Shark eco-tourism is a multi-million dollar industry, but little is known about its potential ecological impact.Past studies have shown that shark ecotourism is related to the decline of shark species in some ecotourism sites, but the study on the effect of ecotourism on shark behavior is unclear.
Joel Gayford and colleagues from the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial Institute of Technology analyzed 39 whale shark videos in the Bay of La Paz, Mexico, comparing the behavior of an eco-tourist swimmer (20 videos) with that of a shark (19 videos).
The researchers observed that increased patterns of disturbed behavior while swimmers were in the field may cause whale sharks to spend more energy than swimming alone.This behavioral change may make it more difficult for whale sharks to find food, and may even affect their reproductive success.These findings suggest that operators of shark eco-tourism should be encouraged to assess the behaviour of individual sharks before allowing swimmers into the water, and should re-examine the minimum required distance between visitors and sharks.
The researchers suggest that further research on the ecological impact of shark ecotourism is needed to properly assess the consequences of the industry for different species.
