It is well known that water is not a medium of writing, because the ink moves and spins constantly and quickly diffuses into the water, unable to form a structure.Previous studies have used scanning probe lithography to "write" on self-assembled monomolecular membranes immersed in liquids; now commercial slates are available for divers to write underwater.However, all of these methods still depend on the substrate.
This time, the team wanted to devise a way to really "write in liquid".Such an approach must prevent the rapid spread of drawing lines, and the writer needs a very small "pen" that does not stir up much turbulence as it moves through the liquid medium.Because in liquid, the smaller the moving object, the less vortex or eddy current is produced.
The team's solution is to put ink directly into the water and use microbeads made of ion-exchange resin as pens with diameters between 20-50 microns without creating swirls at all.
The beads "write" by changing the local pH of the water, attracting ink particles to these areas.As the sink is tilted, the ink particles in the bead move along the track, drawing the desired letters or characters, so it is possible to "write" a letter in the water.
In a coin-sized sink, the researchers drew a simple house-like pattern, the size of which is as large as the "I" character in font 18, which can be viewed under a microscope.
Although the technology is still in its infancy, it opens up a range of possibilities, for example, to extend to other types of pens that can travel through water by themselves through laser-heated pens.
Throughout history, the evolution of art has a long history, and this new method opens up a "multi-talented" way for writing, painting and fluid composition, even on a micro-scale.
