Recently, the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has proposed a strategy to incorporate flexible oligomer receptors into the active layer of organic solar cells.
With the growth of wearable electronic equipment market, the requirements for wearable power generation equipment are becoming more and more strict.Organic solar cells are the ideal solution for flexible power supply due to their light weight, strong design and easy processing.However, compared with rigid organic solar cells with photoelectric conversion efficiency of more than 19%, flexible organic solar cells still lack photoelectric conversion efficiency and mechanical properties.Therefore, the development of flexible organic solar cells with high photoelectric conversion efficiency and high mechanical stability is still very challenging.
The researchers first synthesized a series of oligomer receptor materials (DOY-C2, DOY-C4 and TOY-C4) with different bridging units and degree of polymerization by using different flexible bridging segments.These oligomer receptors also exhibit different mechanical properties and accumulation behavior due to different polymerization degree and flexibility of bridging units.Meanwhile, the flexible oligomeric receptor showed better mechanical properties than the traditional small molecule receptor material N3.
In order to investigate the effect of oligomer receptors as a third component on the efficiency of organic solar cells, the researchers prepared the corresponding rigid cell devices.By characterizing various parameters of the cell, the researchers found that the oligomer receptor incorporated into the cell could increase the open circuit voltage by reducing the non-radiative energy loss.The device based on D18:N3:DOY-C4 shows 19.01% rigid photoelectric conversion efficiency and 17.91% flexible photoelectric conversion efficiency, which is also one of the highest efficiencies of flexible organic solar cells.
The researchers then conducted tensile tests on the active layer material.Compared with 7.8% of D18:N3 mixed film, 15% DOY-C4 mixed film showed nearly 12% fracture tensile rate, which was more than 50% increase year on year-on-year.By analyzing the morphology of the films after stretching, the authors think that the flexible oligomer receptor can form a kind of entanglement behavior with the polymer donor.
The results were published in Advanced Materials, co-authored by Ye Qinrui and Chen Zhenyu, PhD students at Ningbo Materials Institute, and corresponded by Song Wei and Ge Ziyi, PhD researchers at the Institute.
