Water-based zinc ion batteries have great potential in large-scale electrochemical energy storage due to their high safety, low cost and environment-friendly advantages.Recently, Yang Weishan, a researcher at Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Zhu Kaiyue, an associate researcher, made new progress in the research of negative poles of water-based zinc ion batteries.Zn(002) formation is continuously induced during the charging and discharging cycle, which can effectively inhibit the formation of dendrites and by-products and achieve a stable cycle of more than 6,900 hours.The results are published in Energy and Environmental Science.
At present, the reversibility of negative poles is limited due to the disorderly deposition of zinc ions, which hinders the commercial application of zinc ion batteries.The disorderly deposition results from the strong interdependence between electric field, substrate and zinc ion flux and the sensitivity to small disturbances in the system.
In order to solve the above problem, the Zn ion transport carrier with large mass-to-charge ratio was introduced to decouple the ion flux from the electric field substrate.
It is found that MOF nanometer sheets can be used as zinc ion carrier for dynamic circulation because of their adsorption to zinc ions and one-dimensional pore structure.Comprehensive characterization and experimental results reveal the key role of dynamic MOF nanoparticles in optimizing zinc negative electrode during circulation.
This work presents a new and efficient strategy for optimizing the negative electrode of Zn-ion batteries, which can be applied to various MOF ligands, substrates and electrolytes.
