I believe this orientation is extremely necessary. However, to achieve real results, we need to adhere to two world-class small and excellent schools for a long time.

What is world class? The answer is very clear. Take a world-class university, such as Harvard, Stanford and MIT, and see what it will produce, such as what new fields it has created, what great students have emerged, what important and influential awards it has been awarded, what impact it has on the world, and so on. World class is definitely not abstract gossip, but practical and concrete output results.

So why two world-class small and fine? Chinese universities are keen to talk about their university world rankings, article rankings, etc., but these may not be useful for academic progress and the improvement of students' literacy. The construction of double first-class can not finally become a queue in China, but must be benchmarked with the real world-class, which is meaningful. World class universities and world-class disciplines. In terms of discipline construction, this is the key. In the past, although there were many schools and majors in Chinese universities, the mode of teaching and scientific research was almost the same. Disciplines actually do not exist. All disciplines are just different from each other in name and have no own characteristics.

To bridge the gap with the world's first-class, we must make efforts with points. As a double first-class discipline, from the operational level, we must show our position in the world higher education level, and we must also benchmark a world-class discipline. For example, at present, in physics, China has eight double first-class discipline construction points. Each construction site should find out what the symbol of becoming a world-class should be, how to select the starting point of becoming a world-class, and which world-class university in the world should be benchmarked with the world-class discipline? In my opinion, the meaning of "double first-class" is not the first-class of Chinese universities and Chinese disciplines, but the double first-class of world-class disciplines reaching world-class universities.

There is no doubt that we need to grasp a point first and make sure that this point is world-class, and this world-class is convincing, whether it is to explain itself or to target foreign countries. This is the so-called world-class concept of small and fine. The construction of double first-class disciplines must be point by point, at least one point or several points. It is certainly not suitable for too many at the beginning. For schools with poor discipline construction, it's best to grasp one point. Better schools can catch it together at several points.

You have to get a world-class logo first, and then get more world-class logos on this basis. This is the detailed path to build a double first-class discipline. To point force, to point benchmarking, so you will know where your gap is. For example, eight physics double first-class construction disciplines can not start to strive for world-class in all fields of physics. If so, there must be a problem. For each construction site, we should first make clear where our starting point is, who is the most influential on this starting point, whether we can let those talented students enter this starting point, whether our own teachers can well support this starting point, and to what extent our world-class universities have achieved the same subject fields as this starting point, Why can you obviously eliminate the gap with the world-class in the next 5-10 years, and even reach the world-class level?

The goal of double first-class discipline construction must and must be the double first-class of world-class disciplines of world-class universities, which is the double first-class of benchmarking. The university itself may not be world-class, but your discipline must meet the standards of world-class disciplines of world-class universities. Of course, the current selection of double first-class discipline construction points has some balance considerations, but no one can say clearly. Perhaps which discipline point that doesn't seem to be very good has really grasped its own starting point and made rapid progress.
