In order to further improve the popularity, practicability and service effect of meteorological service products, the China Meteorological Administration recently issued the specifications for meteorological geographical zoning and the provisions on the business of geographical terms of national meteorological service products (hereinafter referred to as the specifications and provisions respectively), so as to strengthen the scientificity and standardization of geographical zoning of meteorological service terms.

Those regional terms that once "confused" you - northern North China, northern Northwest China, Western China, Huanghuai, Jianghuai and Jiangnan - will no longer appear frequently, but will be replaced by concise and easy to understand "western Beijing", "Northern Hubei" and "Southern Jiangsu".

After this adjustment, national meteorological service products will only use the names of primary divisions (such as North China and East China) and specific divisions (such as Jianghuai and Huanghuai) in a few specific cases, and the "main force" expressing the geographical scope will be transformed into 34 provincial administrative regions well known to all walks of life and the public, such as western Inner Mongolia and central Guangzhou. For example, if the "provincial administrative region + orientation" method still can not accurately describe the weather process involving regions, the meteorological department will also use more detailed zoning such as cities, counties and even specific locations.

According to the general knowledge of the government, relevant departments and the public and the commonly used geographical terms widely accepted by meteorological services for a long time, and in combination with the expression characteristics of written products of decision-making meteorological services and public meteorological services, the specifications divides China's land meteorological geographical areas into three categories: regional zoning, specific regional zoning and watershed zoning, It also standardized the names and jurisdiction of divisions at all levels.

The first level regional division divides China's land into 10 regions, including North China, northeast, East China, central China, South China, southwest, northwest and Inner Mongolia, Tibet and Xinjiang; The secondary region is divided into 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities directly under the central government and 2 special administrative regions; The three-level regional division is to divide provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government) into several azimuth areas according to the east-west and North-South directions, combined with the regional division of local general knowledge and weather and climate characteristics, such as the north, central, South, West and east of Beijing.

There are 11 regions in total, including the north, South, Middle East, East, middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Qinghai Tibet Plateau, West China, Huang Huai, Jiang Huai, Jiangnan and Jianghan regions. River Basin zoning divides Chinese rivers into seven basins, namely the Yangtze River (including Taihu Lake), the Yellow River, the Pearl River, the Huaihe River, the Haihe River, the Liaohe River and the Songhua River. Each basin zoning also has secondary basins. For example, the Yangtze River Basin is divided into the upper reaches, the middle reaches and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

According to the regulations, the geographical terms of national meteorological service products shall be concise, comprehensive and general. For example, the title should generally use the names of secondary and tertiary divisions in regional divisions, such as "Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and other places", "Northern Hubei and southern Henan", which involve many provinces, and can be abbreviated, such as "Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Jinyu, Shandong and other places"; In principle, the names of primary divisions and specific regional divisions and the names of cities and counties in regional divisions are not used, and only the names of primary divisions and specific regional divisions are used for more than 7 provinces; When a certain watershed or sub watershed is involved, the name of the primary or secondary watershed in the watershed zoning shall be used, such as "the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River".

The text content uses the names of secondary and tertiary divisions in the regional division. If the involved area cannot be accurately described, it can be combined with the actual use of more refined divisions, such as the names of cities and counties; When listing extreme weather, extreme values and major emergencies in specific regional divisions, it can be subdivided into cities and counties, but the name of the subordinate province (autonomous region, municipality directly under the central government) shall be added in front.
