This important fossil discovery and research progress paper of the research team was recently published online in the international professional academic journal Journal of vertebrate paleontology, with Gong Hao of the Institute of vertebrate paleontology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as the first author.
Gong Hao said that Yushu is a kind of rodent with porcupine type skull and squirrel type jaw, belonging to the superfamily of comb toe rats of rodents. The species diversity of the living comb toed rodents is low, only 4 genera and 5 species, and the geographical distribution is limited to North and East Africa. The diversity of comb toed rodent fossils is high. At least 37 genera are known, which were widely distributed in Eurasia from Eocene to Miocene (about 56 million – 5.3 million years ago).
Based on the fossil specimens collected from Mianchi, Henan Province, Chinese paleomammalian Mr. Li Chuankui established the genus Yushu and its model species porpoise Yushu in 1975. At present, Yushu is known to be distributed in 12 fossil sites in North and southwest China, with a total of 9 species and a small number of undetermined species. Its age mainly occurs in the early to late Middle Eocene (about 48-38 million years ago). It is usually regarded as one of the standard fossils constrained by the stratigraphic age of Paleogene mammals in China.
In the process of investigating the sedimentary development in the western margin of Ordos Basin and the uplift of Liupanshan structure, the research team found new Yushu fossil specimens from the strata of Sikouzi formation Qingshuiying formation. The newly discovered Henan rat fossil is a species with the largest individual, the highest tooth crown and the strongest tooth ridge among all known Henan rat species, so it is named robust Henan rat. The tooth characteristics of the new species are obviously progressive, indicating that its age should belong to the late Eocene. The size and morphology of the fossil are almost the same as those of the antler's ridged tooth mouse deer in erdin Obo, Mongolia. The age of the Altyn OBO fauna in Mongolia is generally considered to be the late Eocene. Therefore, the appearance of an's ridge tooth mouse deer in the Sikouzi formation Qingshuiying formation further indicates that there is a late Eocene fossil horizon in this set of strata.
In addition, the research team also systematically determined the fossils of the genus Yumura reported by predecessors, and revised the generic characteristics of the genus Yumura and its model species - the species characteristics of the dolphin Yumura in detail. The team also tried to estimate the weight of Yushu. According to the empirical formula, the weight of Yushu may be between 485 – 880 grams, between the living Zokor and giant squirrel. By comparing the new species with other known species of Henan rats, from the early Middle Eocene to the late Eocene, Henan rats showed an evolutionary trend of buccal teeth gradually increasing, crown height increasing and body weight increasing.
