The researchers explained that when charmon (D0) and its antiparticle (anti-d0) exist in the form of superposition, the waves of d0 and anti-d0 overlap in various ways, forming another two matter particles D1 and D2 that are also in the superposition state. Although D1 and D2 are also composed of d0 and anti-d0, the mixing ratio is slightly different, which makes them have different quality and life. Because the mass of these particle waves determines their wavelengths and how they interact, the mass difference between D1 and D2 determines the speed at which charmons "transform" between antimatter and positron. The study found that the quality difference was only 3.5 × 10-38 G.

To make such a precise measurement, the researchers observed the 30.6 million charmons produced by proton proton collisions in LHC, compared the differences between the charmons that moved the shortest distance and the longest distance before decay, and calculated the mass differences accordingly.

This is the second time that scientists have discovered that particles oscillate between positive and negative matter. In 2006, scientists first observed the "Metamorphosis" behavior of strange base mesons, but it is much more difficult to find this in charm mesons because they are more prone to decay.

The standard model shows that the big bang produced the same amount of positive and negative matter, and they would annihilate each other when they met. But why is the universe we live in now almost entirely composed of matter? Particles that can "morph" between positive and negative matter may be the key to answering this question, researchers said. Some hypotheses suggest that if charmons and other particles transform from antimatter to matter more frequently than from matter to antimatter, matter will not be annihilated.

LHC will be restarted in September this year, and similar research is being carried out in Belle II experiment in Japan. Scientists are expected to find further clues.
