A research team composed of Chinese, Australian and American scholars recently discovered two new species of the genus Coleoptera in Xigaze, Tibet and Nujiang, Yunnan, named Tibet Coleoptera and snow mountain Coleoptera respectively. Li Quan, the first author of the paper and assistant researcher of Kunming Institute of zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that cashmere flying squirrels, with a total length of more than 1 meter and a weight of up to 2.5 kg, belong to the flying squirrels family of Rodentia, known to be distributed in the Himalayan region, is the largest gliding mammal with the highest altitude (up to 4800 meters). The World Conservation Union (IUCN) has assessed the threat level of cashmere flying squirrels as endangered (EN), with an estimated population of only 1000 to 3000.
The research team conducted a detailed morphological and genetic comparison of 24 cashmere flying mice collected by the Chinese and foreign natural history museums, and finally confirmed that cashmere flying mice are likely to be distributed in the whole Himalayas and the mountainous areas of Northwest Yunnan, and have differentiated into three species with significantly different coat color, cheek teeth and genetics.
"People in many areas of China commonly refer to flying foxes as flying foxes. Because the habitat of cashmere flying foxes in Yunnan has been covered with snow for half a year, I named them after" flying foxes in snow mountain "in Mr. Jin Yong's martial arts novels." Li Quan said that the cashmere flying squirrel in Tibet is named after the place name.
"Cashmere flying squirrels have the highest crown of teeth among flying squirrels, and most of their food is composed of needles rich in tannins and other toxic substances, which is of great scientific value to the study of high altitude adaptation and herbivorous evolution of mammals." Li Quan said the study found that the evolution of the cashmere flying squirrel is closely related to the uplift of the Himalayas and the changes of the river systems in southern Asia.
The discovery of two new species of Coleoptera shows once again that the Himalayas and Hengduan Mountains are rich in biological resources. Since 2014, when the snow cashmere flying squirrel was first photographed by infrared camera, it has been detected by the management and Protection Bureau of Lushui and Gongshan National Nature Reserve for seven consecutive years. It is found that although the species is rare, because its habitat is far away from human settlements, it is not directly disturbed by human beings, and the population is very healthy.
