The top 1% seems to be very powerful. In fact, for a paper that has just been published for a year or two, it doesn't need a lot of citations to enter the top 1%.
For example, take the papers published in IEEE journals as an example. Generally speaking, if they are published 15 times a year, 50 times in two years and 80 times in three years, they will become highly cited papers in ESI. That is to say, as long as your paper meets one of the above conditions at a certain sampling point (once every two months) after publication, it will become a highly cited paper of ESI.
More than ten or twenty citations a year can easily be done through mutual citations in small circles. Especially for tracking research in hot fields, due to the large number of small circles, it is easy to produce a large number of highly cited papers and scholars through mutual citation. This is the main reason for the great harvest of highly cited papers in China in recent years. The vast majority of these highly cited papers were listed in the ESI high cited papers list in the first two years of publication, while few of them can become highly cited papers after five years of publication.
Therefore, to correctly understand and use the cited times of papers, we need to introduce two thresholds: time threshold and quantity threshold“ "Time threshold" is Mr. Hua Luogeng's principle of "early publication, late evaluation"“ "Quantity threshold" is to filter out the noise of small circles. Time threshold: six years after the publication of the paper, the citation times will be used as the evaluation index of the paper, ignoring the citation times of the first three years after the publication, only considering the cumulative citation times of the paper three years after the publication.
